Key Performance Requirements for Shank Adapters in Application

As the core transmission component connecting the rock drill to the drill rod in rock drilling equipment, the shank adapter withstands high-frequency impacts from the rock drill's impact piston and rotational torque during drilling operations

As the core transmission component connecting the rock drill to the drill rod in rock drilling equipment, the shank adapter withstands high-frequency impacts from the rock drill's impact piston and rotational torque during drilling operations; it bears the bending stress of the drill rod during the drilling process and the instantaneous torque caused by bit sticking; and it is subjected to the scouring and corrosion of high-pressure, highly corrosive flushing water. Therefore, shank adapters must possess extremely high durability and reliability. The specific requirements are as follows:

I. Mechanical Properties

1. High Fatigue Strength. During drilling operations, the shank adapter is subjected to high-frequency impact loads (usually thousands of times per minute), making it prone to fatigue fracture. Therefore, high fatigue strength is the most core performance indicator of a shank adapter, directly determining its service life.

2. High Surface Hardness and Wear Resistance. The mating surfaces of the shank adapter—including the impact end, splines, outer diameter, and threads—experience relative friction when transmitting torque. The surface must have high hardness and good wear resistance to reduce wear and ensure mating accuracy. At the same time, hardness should be controlled within a reasonable range to ensure good mating between the shank adapter and related rock drill components, as well as between the shank adapter and the drill rod, without damaging related components or the drill rod.

3. High Core Toughness. The core of the shank adapter must maintain good toughness, capable of absorbing impact energy without brittle fracture, and able to withstand the strong bending stress of the drill rod. "Hard surface, tough core" is the ideal microstructural state pursued in shank adapter heat treatment.

4. High Impact Toughness. The shank adapter must be able to withstand repeated impacts from the rock drill piston without fracture, especially under abnormal operating conditions such as drill jamming and eccentric loading.

II. Dimensional and Mating Accuracy

1. Scientific and Rational Detail Design. Detail designs such as water hole configuration, spline chamfers, thread start and end, and transition areas should be scientific and rational, with smooth and refined transitions. This ensures more stable and reliable mating between various components and the drill string during shank adapter drilling operations.

2. Precise Dimensions. Dimensional tolerances of critical parts such as the center hole, outer diameter, and splines must be strictly controlled to ensure reliable mating with the rock drill and drill rod.

3. Good Straightness. Bending deformation of the shank adapter leads to reduced impact energy transmission efficiency and accelerated local wear, making the straightening process critically important.

4. Perpendicularity of End Faces to the Shank Adapter Axis. The perpendicularity of the shank adapter's impact end face and thread end face relative to its axis must be effectively ensured through scientific and rational manufacturing process steps. This guarantees complete face contact between the rock drill piston and the shank adapter impact end face, as well as between the shank adapter and the drill rod impact end face, enabling efficient impact energy transmission and reducing abnormal failure of the drill string.

5. Low Surface Roughness. The surface quality of mating surfaces directly affects frictional wear and stress concentration; precision grinding processes can effectively reduce surface roughness.

III. Environmental Adaptability

1. Corrosion Resistance. In humid or corrosive environments such as mines and tunnels, shank adapters must possess a certain degree of corrosion resistance. In severely corrosive environments, chrome plating or coating protection is required to enhance the corrosion resistance of the shank adapter.

IV. Traceability

1. Traceability. The unique identification of each shank adapter facilitates quality tracking and failure analysis, serving as an important link in modern industrial quality management.
